‘New Romário’ transfer claim

Santos star Marcos Leonardo ‘is going to Liverpool’, according to suggestions from Brazil, with the prolific forward impressing in his homeland.

Compared to Brazilian legend Romário over the weekend, Sport Witness relay a bizarre tale from South America involving an ‘extravagant’ TV presenter making the claims.

The 19-year-old is considered one of the best prospects in Brazil and has already scored 24 times for the Santos senior team. Whether Liverpool are truly interested remains to be seen, but the player sounds like someone worth keeping an eye on in future.

Serge Gnabry ‘talks’

Liverpool have ‘held talks’ with Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry, according to Spanish outlet SPORT, after the 26-year-old rejected several contract offers from the Bundesliga champions.

Gnabry, who has scored 64 goals and assisted another 40 in 171 appearances for Bayern Munich, is also said to be on the radar of Real Madrid, Liverpool supposedly view Gnabry as a Sadio Mané replacement.

That is despite Liverpool having signed Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz to bolster their forward line and the Reds being insistent that their business in this transfer window is finished.

The Reds could also sign Gnabry for nothing next summer when his contract in Germany expires but the suggestion is a fee of £35-40m to sign him now. Like with a midfielder, waiting a year seems far more likely at this stage.

Lionel Messi plea

Sadio Mané’s ‘advisor’ has revealed that Lionel Messi attempted to get Barcelona to buy him from Liverpool as part of the discussions over a new contract for the Argentinean at the Camp Nou.

Bacary Cissé told PSG: “PSG did indeed ‘attack’ Sadio. Leonardo had several contacts. They saw each other, they discussed the ins and outs of a possible transfer of Sadio, but it ended there. Everyone knows that Leonardo was on an ejection seat [he has since been replaced as sporting director]; we had to wait.

“Last year it could have also happened with Liverpool. It was Lionel Messi who imposed Sadio in the deal when it was a question of him extending to Barca. He had given two names: Sadio Mané and an Argentinian central defender.”

Instead, Mané played another season with RMC Sport, Messi moved on a free to PSG, and now the Senegal forward has moved to Bayern Munich for a fee that could reach £35m.
