The recently launched OnePlus 9 Pro has been lauded for its display, its camera, and, notably, its battery. There are two factors of real importance when considering smartphone batteries: how long they’ll last and how quickly they can be charged once they’ve run out of juice. The OnePlus 9 Pro performs well on one of these fronts and outstandingly on the other.
Smartphone battery capacities are measured in milliampere-hours (mAh). The figure conveys how many milliamps a battery can provide consistently for one hour. Devices drawing less than that figure will, of course, last for longer than an hour. So, a smartphone with a 3,000 mAh battery that lasts on average for 30 hours draws an average of 100 milliamps each hour. Most smartphone batteries are 3,000-5,000 mAh, with larger powerhouses being between 4,000-5,000 mAh. Generally speaking, those with bigger batteries should last for longer, but there is a huge variation in how efficiently different smartphones draw upon their batteries — for example, due to the display technology they use — so it’s by no means a hard and fast rule. The pattern is perhaps clearer within certain brands or phone series.
The OnePlus 9 Pro shares the same 4,500 mAh battery (comprising two 2,250 mAh cells) as the standard OnePlus 9, which puts them at the higher end of capacities. At face value, this means users should be able to expect a decent period between charges relative to other smartphones — and that is the case. Countless places carry out smartphone battery tests in one form or other but the thorough and reliable GSMArena.com gives the OnePlus 9 Pro results of 33:57 hours of 3G talk time, 13:12 hours of web browsing, and 13:34 hours of video playback. Its overall ‘endurance rating,’ when a device is used “for an hour of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily,” is 86 hours. GSMArena.com says these figures represent average battery performance compared to other devices but, for many users, they will be well above what is required. In short, users will get a full day’s heavy use out of the OnePlus 9 without needing to charge it.
OnePlus 9 Pro Charging Among The Very Fastest
But charging is the party piece that OnePlus has given the 9 and the 9 Pro. They boast both the company’s fastest ever wired and wireless charging solutions. The 65W wired charger and 50W wireless are both powerful and therefore fast in their own rights. What’s more, by splitting the battery of the 9 and 9 Pro into two, OnePlus has been able to cut their charging time even further as both cells can be charged at the same time.
For the OnePlus 9 Pro, this means a full charge in 29 minutes using the wired Warp Charge 65T option and a charge from empty to 70 percent in 30 minutes using the Warp Charge 50 Wireless option. GSMArena.com pegs that wired charge time as being faster than any other phone bar two, one of which is the OnePlus 9. It’s also possible to charge other Qi-enabled devices wirelessly from the OnePlus 9 Pro.
What does all this mean? Well, the OnePlus 9 Pro (and indeed the standard OnePlus 9) charges quickly enough to not just be more convenient than other devices but to change the user’s relationship with their phone too. No more needing to charge overnight, no more planning ahead, and no more waiting around while your phone charges enough to last the time you need. A decent battery and super-fast charging mean the OnePlus 9 Pro reduces power to as small of an issue in a top-end smartphone as has ever been the case.
