Owen Beck Heading On Loan to Portugal

[ad_1]

Liverpool FC is ready to send their 19-year-old Welsh left-back Owen Beck on loan. Surprisingly, it’s not to the Championship or League One. Instead, it’s Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Famalicão. Liverpool have raved about Owen Beck in previous pre-seasons, so they will be hoping that this Portuguese odyssey furthers along his development.

It’s the latest in a series of moves that really shows what the Liverpool FC brain trust thinks of the Portuguese League. Of course, there were the signings of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez. But also, sporting director Julian Ward and assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders have strong links with Portuguese football.

Julian Ward worked for the Portuguese national team as a Head of analysis and technical scouting circa 2008. He worked in a four-man scouting team who would supply then-manager Carlos Quieroz with information about their next opponents, as well as their own players. After that gig, Ward would work for the Reds as Ward as a Liverpool scout in Spain and Portugal for three years. Lijnders’ work in Portugal is also well-documented, having his craft as a youth coach for seven years at FC Porto’s academy.

At the end of the day, it’s always good to have options. Depending on what the boys need for the next phase of their individual development, they can go to another Premier League or Championship club, and now it seems a Portuguese club.
